It’s true that we could all do with a little bit of sunshine when things aren’t going the way we planned, right? What better time is there to catch the sun at its prettiest than sunset? The great thing about sunsets is that they happen all around the world, every single day! That means that although sunsets are ubiquitous events, none are the same. So without further ado, it’s time to begin our tour of sunsets around the world!
Sunsets Around the World – Africa
Let’s start with Africa. Why Africa? Because it starts with A, which is always a good place to start a tour of sunsets around the world. If you haven’t been to Africa yet, you’re totally missing out. It’s an awesome continent full of beautiful people, cultures and landscapes.
Here’s a city sunset from Cotonou in the West African country of Benin.
How about a radiant sunset while relaxing on a Felucca floating down the Nile River in Egypt.
Perhaps another river sunset is in order? Back over the on the West coast of Africa, the Gambia River lights up beautifully at dusk.
Let’s stay in West Africa for a bit longer and check out the orange sky of Wli, Ghana at sunset.
Okay, back to the east coast and probably one of Africa’s most well-known countries, Kenya. Here you can see the sunset over ‘The Pride of Africa’.
Sunsets on water are awesome, aren’t they? Just like this one on a lake in Monrovia, Liberia.
Maybe the little town of Settat, just south of Casablanca in Morocco can do better?
Our final sunset in Africa is in the port capital of Freetown in West Africa’s Sierra Leone.
Sunsets Around the World – The Americas
Our first Americas sunset comes from the awesome little Latin American country of Nicaragua. Haven’t been yet? Then you need to start planning to visit this hidden gem. Maybe we can whet your appetite with a quick sunset shot of an historic building in Leon.
Next, we have a picture of a sunset from one of the world’s most famous North American cities. Do you know which one?
We’ve already established that water sunsets are cool. What if the watercourse is the river that separates the US from Canada and has bits of ice floating in it? Does that make it even better? You be the judge.
Next Stop, Asia
Asia is the next stop on our sunsets around the world tour. As the largest continent in the world, you can be guaranteed many chances to capture awesome sunsets. Let’s start in the east with Mongolia.
Sunsets Around the World – East Asia
These are the beautiful desert mountains of the Terelj National Park about an hour from Ulaanbatar.
Next, to answer the question, “How can we make a sunset better?”. Just add water. This is somewhere on the sea between Japan and Taiwan.
Can you guess where we’ll head next? Above the sea of clouds in Taiwan! It only took a two day hike into the mountains near Tai Dong to snap this one. Totally worth it!
Now on to China. You don’t often see the sun through the smog of Chinese cities, but when you do, it can be amazing! See how the sunset lights up the buildings in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen.
Check out these amazing dusk scenes right near my home in Hong Kong.
I’m not biased at all, but these are obviously the best sunsets in all of Asia. No need to see any more sunsets in Asia, right? Okay, maybe the best in East Asia. So let’s move on to Southeast Asia.
Sunsets Around the World – Southeast Asia
Just to warm you up, this is a sunset seen from a train between Mandalay and Yangon in Myanmar.
Not doing it for ya? Well, it’s been a while since we’ve seen a water sunset, so here’s one in Laos.
Then another in the Bruneian city of Kuala Belait.
And yet another in the lion city, Singapore.
Are you getting sick of water sunsets yet? Don’t worry, we’ve saved the best for last. (For now). But we think you’ll love this amazing shot of a purple sky over the coast near Kupang in West Timor. It’s the stuff that dreams are made of!
Sunsets Around the World – South Asia
On to South Asia and island sunsets. So if you don’t like water sunsets, look away now! For those still with us, we will now reward you with the Sri Lankan capital of Colombo at dusk.
Then we have this mesmerising sunset from the pier at the tiny island of Himmafushi in the Maldives.
Rounding out the South Asian segment of the tour is Dhaka in Bangladesh. An absolutely crazy city that still manages to produce calm and peaceful sunsets.

Amazing Sunsets Around the World – Central Asia
As one of the least travelled regions in the world, Central Asia is a lovely place for quiet reflection with no interruptions. And sunsets like no other. I mean, just look at the amazing colours at Solomon’s Mountain in Kyrgystan’s second biggest city, Osh. I’ll wait.
Nothing could beat a pink sky behind a mountain, surely? How about a huge pit of burning gas in the desert of Turkmenistan? Now that’s something you don’t see every day!
Sunsets Around the World – Western Asia
We’ll move on to Western Asia now, where there are deserts, but no fire pits. Maybe it’s time to change things up a bit and frame the sunsets a bit differently. Like through the window of a coastal fort.
Or under the arch of a desert camp outside of Dubai.
If you’re religious, you might like the idea of seeing a sunset from the Jesus Trail near Nazareth in Israel.
Or just thank god that you’re not under the most menacing-looking sun ever in Baalbek, Lebanon.
Sunsets Around the World – Europe
Now it’s time to see what the European continent has to offer in the way of sunsets. First up, we have a sunset somewhere north of Oslo in Norway.
Europe can do better! Wouldn’t you agree? So what do you think about this Latvian sunset in Riga?
It feels like there’s something missing. What we need is an island sunset from the sleepy Pag Island in Croatia!
When it comes to sunsets in Europe, the medieval towns do it best. Exhibit one: Prague, Czech Republic.
Exhibit two: Vilnius, Lithuania.
Sunsets Around the World – Oceania
Our tour of sunsets around the world concludes in the crystal blue waters of Oceania. Expect to see a whole lot of sunsets with water! We’re going to start with a small island archipelago in Micronesia called Palau. It’s fabulous and this sunset absolutely doesn’t do it justice.
Then we’ll pop over to Polynesia and the awe-inspiring Cook Islands. This South Pacific country really is an island paradise.
Next we’ll move to Melanesia where we’ll find a piece of Europe on Grand Terre, the main island of New Caledonia.
Last, but not least, we’ll head to Australia’s Outback to see that the sun really does shine differently in the Land Down Under.
