Entering Armenia By Air

Flying to Yerevan With Fly Dubai After visiting a friend in Dubai, I got on a 700 AED (US$190) flight from Dubai to Yerevan with Fly Dubai.

If you don’t know about Fly Dubai, it’s the United Arab Emirates no frills airline.

On arrival, immigration staff were relatively friendly, but you can expect them to examine your passport closely.

You might be entitled to up to 600€. Check if you’re eligible and file a claim in under 3 minutes at Claim Compass

.

Of course the officer found my Azerbaijan stamp from a few years ago and asked why I went there. You see, Armenia and Azerbaijan are currently having a little spat about land.

Armenian Administration on Azerbaijani Land

The Artsakh Republic, formerly known as Nagorno-Karabakh, is a mostly non-recognised state administered by Armenia but claimed by Azerbaijan.

Armenian immigration will ask about your reasons for visiting Azerbaijan and will let you in if they’re satisfied with your reason.

With Azerbaijan, on the other hand, you’re on their permanent shit list if you enter Armenia.

Welcome to Yerevan, Do you Want a Taxi?

There is no way of getting out of the Yerevan airport without being asked if you want a taxi. You may even get approached by the same driver several times.

If taxis are your thing, then go for it, but it’s cheap and easy to get a marshrutka (minibus) from the airport to the city. It only costs 300 Armenian dram (US$0.75) and runs every 30 minutes.

Just pay the driver as you exit the van.

If you don’t like taxis or buses, you could always hire a car.

What to Do in Yerevan – See the Dogs of the City

When walking around the streets of Yerevan, you will see dogs. Many dogs.

If you visit in late autumn, when Yerevan weather is nice and cool, (around 10°C), most of the dogs just seem to be resting and unaware that there’s a whole city buzzing around them.

They generally won’t approach people. In fact, they are normally quite indifferent.

Things to Do in Yerevan – Meet Russians and Hear Their Stories While Eating Cheap Food

Almost as soon as I got off the minibus, I met a very friendly Russian guy, Ilya, who was eager to practice English. He took me to a local canteen style eatery, which is where all the cheap meals, (1500-2000AMD or US$3.8-5), are at.

We ate with two more Russian guys, both named Roman. All three were from different cities; from St Petersburg to Siberia. They all had very similar stories.

They were fleeing conscription and they went to Armenia because people speak Russian there and the MIR Russian banking system is available.

Two had left families behind and didn’t know when they would see them again. They seemed surprisingly positive and upbeat about being able to start new lives abroad and bring their families over.
